Annotations for Every Student
Make Meaningful Connections through Close Reading
We, here at Rocketlit, believe close reading is an integral asset to literacy.
Close Reading engages readers and gives them the confidence to continue their learning journey.
It's even part of the Common Core CCR Anchor Standards for Reading .
"The careful interpretation of a text wherein readers pay close attention to the way ideas unfold as they read.
Often, this involves annotating texts for the sake of slowing ourselves down and recording our thinking so that we
can do cool stuff with what you read."
We absolutely agree, Dave.
That's why we've decided to make our Annotations Feature available for every single student who uses Rocketlit.
Students can use five different annotation styles to highlight text, take notes that they can refer to later,
and even have teachers review and give feedback on what they annotate.
Annotations for Open Book Quizzes
If a teacher decides to allow open book quizzes in their classroom, students can review and use their
annotations while taking their quiz and answering free response quetions
Five Highlighting Styles
Whether marking tough words or identifying key ideas, our styles can be used however you see fit
Highlight in green or
circle it in red.
Box some text in or
highlight pink instead.
Underline words however you must,
use any style you want, for whatever purpose!
Attached Notes
Students can add notes to save their thoughts or questions about a specific word or phrase
- Students can refer back to the notes they took about text they were confused about, want to remember, or just found interesting
- Paired with open book quizzes, students can use their own annotations to help answer difficult questions
- Finally, teachers can review, grade, and/or comment on any annotations a student makes (but only if that teacher wants to)
Teacher Review
Teachers have the option to look over annotations, grade them, and even leave feedback
Rocketlit
serves adaptive readings and assessments from the 3rd through 12th grade reading levels,
tailored for each student, to help struggling readers and challenge advanced students.
Automatic Differentiation
Student reading levels are diagnosed when they first login, and students read the same content at their independent reading level.
Personalized for Every Student
As students improve, they move up reading levels. Both struggling and gifted students read accessible content that challenges them.
Save Time on Lesson Planning
Adapting content takes time and inaccessible textbooks are a barrier to students reading. We're here to make teachers' lives easier.
Students Start with Diagnostics
Your students read three short articles, each followed by a quiz. This sets their initial reading level for upcoming assignments.
Students Always Read Articles at Their Current Reading Level
After reading, your students take a multiple choice quiz and their reading level adapts based on how well they do.
Annotations and Highlighting
Students can highlight, circle, and underline text then attach their own notes for teachers to look over.
Free Response Questions
These come at the end of a quiz, right after the multiple choice section, and can be turned on or off for any assignment.
Articles Read Aloud and Highlighted
Students at lower reading levels or those who need to can listen to the article while following along as text is highlighted.

What Educators Say
Joanne Salustri
7th & 8th Grade Science
It’s a resource students have been motivated to read because the articles are interesting and well-written. It is rewarding to see that after reading the articles and taking the free response questions, they do understand the concepts.

6th Grade Science
The platform’s ease of use and intuitive design drew me in, but the differentiation piece is really the seller . I can look up a million articles on everything on my own, but the website already does it all for me.

6th Grade Science & Social Studies
Finding leveled reading resources with the same concepts had been a struggle, so I love how Rocketlit articles are leveled for individual reading levels, but still have common examples and vocabulary we could discuss as a class.

Middle School Science
Even my most gifted students have voiced their opinions on how challenging Rocketlit is. Which, as a teacher, is something that I appreciate about the product. Many of my students are reading at the 11-12th grade level.
